NTT DoCoMo to launch 4G experiment this year

TOKYO—NTT DoCoMo, the leading mobile carrier in Japan, in the third quarter will launch an experiment for a fourth-generation (4G) mobile service, which will be able to provide 100 Megabits per second (Mbps) data transmission speed, DoCoMo announced on 18 March.

DoCoMo is targeting to launch commercial service for the 4G service in 2010.

According to the mobile carrier, the service will be based on VSF-OFCDM and will realize the high-speed service by dividing the 100 MHz band into 768 carriers.

NTT DoCoMo launched its third-generation (3G) mobile service called FOMA last October and is going to expand the service area nationwide in April.
