HOLTSVILLE, N.Y.—Symbol Technologies Inc. has been awarded a patent for its technology, which enables wireline telephony features like caller I.D. and call forwarding, transfer and waiting on devices using 802.11, 802.11b and 802.11a wireless local area networks.
“It’s an exciting new patent, which leverages our core technology strengths of wireless LAN, mobile computing and bar code data capture,” said Jerome Schwartz, chairman and chief executive officer, in announcing the patent award April 29.
Symbol’s telephonic communications for wireless LANs allows mobile workers to use Private Branch Exchange System voice calling features on the same wireless device performing data applications, and to do so in building environments where cellular coverage is too costly, is unavailable or is not permitted, the company said.
