Microsoft to acquire Vicinity

REDMOND, Wash.-Microsoft Corp. announced it will acquire location-services company Vicinity Corp. in a deal valued at about $96 million.

Microsoft said it will integrate Vicinity into its MapPoint Business Unit.

Vicinity offers location information through the Web, speech-based products and through wireless channels. Microsoft and its MapPoint business have been expanding into the realm of wireless location-based services, and the company recently signed a deal with AT&T Wireless Services Inc. along those lines.
