MANILA, The Philippines-While Globe Telecom and Smart Communications are now offering multimedia messaging service (MMS), such issues as interconnection, standards of interoperability and rates have to be tackled, according to Edgardo Bautista, product development head of Smart.
As both providers grow their MMS subscribers, they have to interconnect each network that would allow subscribers of Globe Telecom to communicate with other users of MMS phone of Smart Communication and vice versa, he added.
Smart would have to talk with Globe on the issue of interconnection including the GPRS rates. Bautista said both providers would have to settle first the rates before an interconnection of their networks would be realized.
Currently, Smart is working on its interoperability standards, he noted.
Bautista is confident that MMS service would stimulate the development of Java-based applications for mobile phones and help boost the software development community.
Likewise, Smart is working with three third-party developers to develop applications for the MMS service.
