TOKYO-Total mobile handset shipments in Japan in September dropped by 38.8 percent on the year to 2.85 million units, according to a survey compiled by Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA). JEITA said it was the 16th consecutive monthly decline.
For September, cellular phone shipments dropped 36.2 percent to 2.78 million units. The association explained the decline was partly because cellular-phone users are not buying new handsets as frequently as they have in the past.
Shipment of PHS handsets in September dropped 76.1 percent on the year to 74,000 units. According to JEITA, mobile handset shipments for the April to September period also dropped 23.2 percent to 20.33 million units.
