Keeping our weekly focus

With the announcement that Wireless Week is slashing its frequency to twice a month, RCR Wireless News has become the only weekly newspaper in the telecom industry. I want to take a moment to assure you we are not changing direction. We are staying with what we’ve been doing for the past 20 years, and what we plan to do for the next 20 years-be the weekly bible for the wireless industry.

We’re proud of that since we were the first weekly newspaper to cover wireless telecom, starting with the PCIA show in 1995.

Every prominent industry has a weekly newspaper to serve the community. We strive to do that; always have. Sometimes the news has been hard for the industry to hear (certainly, depressed wireless stocks are in nobody’s best interest), but we take our fourth-estate privilege seriously. And even when you don’t like the news, an informed decision-maker is usually a wise decision-maker.

RCR Wireless News is fortunate to be owned by Crain Communications Inc. Crain also owns Advertising Age, Automotive News, Pensions and Investments, Modern Healthcare and a variety of other trade newspapers, as well as city newsweeklies. The company is known for its editorial and advertising integrity, and for its strong long-term support for its publications. Make no mistake, the down economy and the depressed telecom market have affected us, as it has every segment of wireless. I’d love to put out a 100-plus page issue again soon, but I don’t see that happening consistently in the near future. Still, I want to assure you we plan to stick to our business plan of being on your desk every Monday morning.

As always, the reader comes first at RCR Wireless News and GlobalWirelessNews.com. More than ever, wireless industry executives need to understand what is happening in this industry and how it will affect them. We offer daily U.S. coverage through our Web site and e-mail service for rcrnews.com, and an international perspective on GlobalWirelessNews.com.

On a lighter note, make sure to check out next week’s issue to see the finalists in RCR Wireless News’ annual Person of the Year award. This year, we’ve decided to let you vote for who you think had the greatest impact on the industry in ’02. The editorial staff will still choose who gets the award (since it’s our award and not a popular vote), but we thought it would be fun to see what you think. Watch for details on the Web sites and in the Dec. 2 issue.
