Sprint PCS begins new location-based services

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.-Sprint introduced two location-based services that will provide driving directions and roadside assistance via a wireless voice call to customers who opt in to the services.

The company said the services are available on request to most customers who subscribe to Roadside Rescue or who call 411 via a Sprint PCS phone to reach Sprint PCS Directory Assistance. Using the service, customers can ask Roadside Rescue dispatchers to identify their locations or ask directory assistance operators to pinpoint their locations for driving directions.

Location services will be offered on an opt-in basis for no additional charge, said the company. However directory assistance charges of $1.25 per call plus airtime and $4 per month for the Roadside Rescue subscription will apply.

The company said it plans additional opt-in location-based voice and data services. “Ultimately, we envision a host of new location-based applications which will complement our existing voice and data services and dramatically simplify and enhance the way people connect through wireless technology,” said Joe Averkamp, director of business development at Sprint.
