DENVER-A new report from the SDR Forum said the international commercial cellular industry represents the most significant opportunity for the deployment of software-defined radio technology.
The report, “Market Segmentation and Sizing” identifies several key attributes of the SDR market that make it attractive for cellular deployments including that the technology fosters re-use of component, chip, subsystem and intellectual property; addresses time-to-market pressures; and has a lower development cost.
The report also found all market segments identified lower costs and software flexibility as important considerations, recent programmable logic advances are creating opportunities for SDR to extend from low throughput processing to higher throughput processing, and the 90 nm and below CMOS digital technologies appear well-positioned to support aggressive SDR capabilities, said the group.
The report is the first in a series of studies commissioned by the SDR Forum and conducted by Jim Gunn Consultancy. The second report, which is scheduled for release during the second quarter, will focus on the cellular industry.
