Wireless to top fixed-line services in Iraq

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates-Wireless technologies are expected to dominate the voice, data and Internet service markets in Iraq, according to a new study from research firm IDC.

According to IDC, GSM will substitute fixed-line services, and VSAT, wireless local area network, broadband fixed wireless, satellite, microwave links and free-space optics will be commonly used for data and Internet access connections. Already, the shortage of fixed-line telecommunications service has resulted in an increased uptake of satellite handsets across the country and an increased usage pattern for those handsets, the analyst group said.

However, IDC cautions that the unstable environment makes any outlooks unclear. “Security concerns are likely to drive investment decision, which will in turn affect employment, the influx of foreign expertise and businesses, consumer and business spending, and the availability and coverage of telecommunications networks,” explained Mohsen Malaki, senior analyst at IDC.
