SCHAUMBURG, Ill.-Motorola Inc. announced it has scored agreements to freeze international roaming payments to Turkish wireless carrier Telsim Mobil Telekomunikasyon. Motorola said the carrier owes it $2.5 billion, a claim backed by international courts.
Motorola said courts in the United States and the United Kingdom have granted its request to have international roaming and interconnect payments to Telsim frozen. The payments are from other carriers and would have otherwise gone to Telsim for international roaming and interconnect services.
“Because Motorola’s claim is not against the carriers, this order will not effect in any way international roaming and interconnect services,” Motorola said in a statement. “It will also be cost neutral.”
Motorola loaned Telsim $2 billion to help the carrier build its network. Motorola said the carrier now counts 8 million subscribers but has not paid back the loan, now worth $2.5 billion.
