Cellular South sees 50% jump in traffic following hurricane

JACKSON, Miss.-Regional wireless operator Cellular South, which claims to have been operational in some of the hardest areas of Mississippi hit by Hurricane Katrina Aug. 29, said that as of Sept. 6 it was handling more than 7 million minutes of daily use on its network in southern parts of the state. The carrier noted the daily usage was a 50-percent increase since Sept. 2.

Cellular South also said more than 90 percent of its retail locations on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and in the Pine Belt area are open, with damaged stores in Gulfport, Pass Christian and Bay St. Louis operating out of tents. The carrier also said it has begun offering free cell-phone call and charge centers for all residents in the area.
