Qualcomm completes W-CDMA testing with DoCoMo

SAN DIEGO-Qualcomm Inc. reported the successful completion of W-CDMA interoperability testing on Japanese telecommunications giant NTT DoCoMo Inc.’s 3GPP W-CDMA-compliant FOMA network. The testing was initiated last June using Qualcomm’s MSM6250 chipset and software solution and included network performance, standby time and talk-time evaluations.

Qualcomm noted the testing ensured that the software for the MSM6250 chipset and all future Qualcomm W-CDMA chipsets would be fully compatible with the FOMA network.

“Qualcomm’s solution will allow global mobile users to roam onto our FOMA network and take advantage of the advanced services we offer,” said Kazuhiko Kushima, vice president of the global network development department for NTT DoCoMo. “We are sure this will lead to rapid expansion of WCDMA globally.”

Qualcomm, which pioneered the CDMA technology standard and has made significant technological inroads in the W-CDMA standard, added that it expects to see commercial products from NTT DoCoMo using its MSM6250 chipset and software solution.

Ericsson last week announced similar W-CDMA interoperability news with DoCoMo.
