Bits and Bytes: Shoppers use Scanbuy product; AT&T launches holiday apps; and more

Scanbuy said customers who have downloaded its ScanLife mobile barcode scanning application on their smartphones have contributed to 30 times more traffic on the platform compared with last year. The application allows shoppers to scan barcodes to obtain information about products. The company said of those products scanned by shoppers, books were the most purchased category while toys were the most scanned category.

AT&T launched a holiday texting campaign and a Santa tracking application. AT&T Wireless customers can text SANTA to 1224 to receive a holiday message from Santa. The entire text conversation is free, said the company. The company also is offering its Santa Tracker application that allows U-Verse TV users to interact with Santa via polls, sing-alongs and read-alongs and games.

Smith Micro Software Inc. announced the availability of the LTE version of its QuickLink Mobile connection management solution. The solution simplifies navigation between different wireless networks, including Wi-Fi, 3G and 4G and offers automated connection capabilities.

GreatCall Inc. said P.C. Richard & Son electronics stores in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania will carry the company’s Jitterbug J cell phones.

Polaris Wireless,which provides software-based wireless location solutions, said it opened a regional headquarters in Dubai Internet City in Dubai to serve its customers in the Middle East and Africa. The company said the new location is part of its plan to expand its international operations. Polaris also has opened locations in Japan, India and Latin America.

Genband unveiled a Web-based application showcase that allows service providers and end users to check out IP applications focused on business collaboration and productivity. Applications such as point-to-point video and video conferencing capabilities are featured, said the company.

Ericsson said it has been recognized by Greenpeace as an IT company that has made efforts to address climate change. Greenpeace gave Ericsson a top ranking on its Cool IT Leaderboard, which ranks companies for their efforts to build low-emission products, mitigate their own energy footprints and support climate and energy policies.

Glu Mobile released its Hero Project App on the App Store for iPhone and iPod Touch devices. The game allows users to create their own superhero to defeat the forces of evil.

RS TechMedic BV is using Sierra Wireless AirPrime Q2687 EDGE wireless modules in its Dyna-Vision telemedicine device. Together the products transmit patient heart rates, respiratory rates and other medical information from patients to health care providers.

Millicom International Cellular said its subsidiary in Tanzania has agreed to sell more than 1,000 towers to Helios Towers Tanzania for $80 million in cash and a minority interested in HTT. The agreement calls for HTT to provide access to towers and build-to-suit services as the company expands its network.

Motorola Inc.‘s Solutions business and Janam Technologies said they have reached an agreement to settle outstanding intellectual property disputes between the two companies. The disputes stem from a patent infringement lawsuit filed by Symbol Technologies, now a subsidiary of Motorola, filed in 2008 against Janam related to mobile computing technologies. The settlement agreement gives Janam a royalty-bearing license under Symbol’s patents related to mobile computing, wireless technology and laser and imaging-based barcode scanning. Specific terms were not released.
