Editor’s Note: The ecosystem of big data and analytics, and its intersection with mobile networks and cloud computing has increasing relevance to wireless in areas that include service assurance, customer experience management, mobile marketing, location-based services and more. SAP found in a recent survey on leveraging business intelligence data in the enterprise, that a majority of business and IT leaders said their companies base at least half of regular business decisions on gut feelings or experience instead of data and information. The survey found that 62% of organizations use less than half of their available data for decision-making. However, the respondents said that although only one-third of companies use information for identifying new opportunities and predicting future behavior and trends, most of them planned to do so in the future. “Our study shows that companies understand the value of information,” said Dr. Carsten Bange, founder and CEO of the Business Application Research Center, which conducted the SAP-commissioned survey. “But in order to unlock the full potential of their data, they need to address and improve data quality, increase the speed at which information is made available, raise awareness of business intelligence at senior management levels and foster a collaborative style of decision-making.” -Mobile media and advertising company Adello has raised $2 million in funding to expand its reach to the U.S. market and in Asia, backed in part by Swisscom’s investment entity. Swisscom uses Adello’s big-data-fueled mobile advertising platform for self-learning campaigns. Adello recently launched offerings in Singapore and has also been recognized by Gartner as a “cool vendor” in infrastructure and big data. –Dutch games marketing firm iQU will acquire Munich-based games analytics company HoneyTracks, which specializes in software-as-a-service-based, real-time big data analytics for games across mobile platforms including iOS, Android and Windows Mobile as well as browser and PC-based games. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but iQU said it will be able to provide “an understanding of how each key component within a game is performing across all channels.” –A recent report by Allied Market Research predicts that the global market for Hadoop-as-a-Service (HaaS) or cloud-based Hadoop will reach $16.1 billion by 2020, reflecting a compound annual growth rate of more than 70% each year. Allied said that the HaaS market doubled between 2012 and 2013 and “is expected to give … tough competition to on-premises-Hadoop in the coming years.” HaaS has been largely restricted to North America, according to Allied Market Research, with Amazon’s Elastic Map Reduce as the most prominent offering.
