Cisco targets data analytics (RCR Mobile Minute)

Cisco launched a new line of servers today that it says will facilitate data analytics and will prepare customers to meet the ever-changing demands of cloud computing. It calls its new UCS servers the M-Series because the series includes modular servers for cloud applications and mini servers for edge applications.

Cisco says its new modular UCS servers will deliver the industry’s first “true disaggregated server architecture,” cutting out up to 95% of the system components that can be duplicated in a traditional server architecture, and cutting the cost of ownership by a third. The company is also launching a new C3160 rack server, optimized for local storage to facilitate data analytics and media streaming.

The mini servers are just what they sound like — smaller versions of Cisco’s workhorses. Cisco says it wants to target new customers, such as small and medium businesses and branch offices of larger clients.

Servers are increasingly important to Cisco as mobile operators and other customers start to defer new purchases of routers and switches, traditionally Cisco’s core products. Many network operators are looking at ways to move routing and switching to software rather than hardware. At the same time, operators are investing in their cloud architectures to leverage their software investments, and that often requires new server purchases.
