Sprint PCS reported near tower deal with Global Signal

SAN FRANCISCO-Sprint PCS may be near selling its tower business to Global Signal Inc. for $1.2 billion, according to press speculations.

The deal, which entails up to 6,500 towers, is expected to be announced today.

Global Signal has been one of the top contenders for the business, especially since the carrier decided to acquire Nextel communications Inc for about $35 billion.

The sale will help lessen the operator’s debt burden.

Global owns or manages more than 3,300 wireless towers and commands about $1.4 billion in market capitalization.
