SANTA ANA, Calif.-Set-top box company eWan 1 Inc. said it scored funding to build a hybrid Wi-Fi/WiMAX network to cover the Los Angeles basin, including Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. eWan 1 said Vocom International Telecommunications Inc. agreed to provide the company with $2 million in bridge funding.
“This is the initial step toward a national rollout that will eventually encompass all 48 continental states,” said William Kettle, the company’s chief executive officer.
Kettle said the company will use the network to power its DMC 200 Advance Digital Media Center, which the company said combines the functions of set-top box, personal computer, home audio, media storage, residential gateway, personal video recorder and telephone in a single platform. Kettle said the network would allow eWan 1 to bypass standard broadband access providers.
