Dwango improves revenues, posts $3M loss

Mobile ringtone provider and game publisher Dwango North America reported record revenues but a nearly $2.8 million loss for the third quarter of 2004.

The company earned $545,000 during the period, more than doubling its revenues in the second quarter. Raising $3 million through a private placement with Weiss, Peck & Greer Investments helped it offset losses of $2.8 million, or 39 cents per share, the company said.

Through the first three quarters, Dwango lost $6.4 million, or 94 cents per share.

“We expect our success in ringtones to help fuel growth in sales of our games and other feature products, where partnerships with Rolling Stone and ESPN allow us to offer popular proprietary content,” said Rick Hennessey, Dwango’s chief executive officer. “We expect that our rapid penetration of many of the leading wireless carriers has laid the groundwork for continued growth in the fourth quarter and 2005.”

Other announcements from mobile content providers Monday included:

  • Jamdat Mobile Inc. has agreed to produce a game based on Nickelodeon’s “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events,” a Paramount Pictures film based on the children’s book series. The film, starring Jim Carrie, Meryl Streep and Jude Law, is scheduled for release Dec. 17.

  • Game publisher In-Fusio announced the U.S. launch of “Midtown Madness 3 Mobile,” based on the popular Microsoft title. One downloadable edition of the game is available for BREW- and Java- enabled handsets, while an enhanced version for smart phones supporting Windows Mobile will be released within a few weeks, In-Fusion said. International versions of the game were released worldwide.
