Apple announcement highlights

This week Apple introduced not only new products, but also some important new interactions that developers need to be aware of. In this episode I discuss the iPad Pro, the Apple Pencil, Apple Watch and new Apple TV. In particular, I’m looking at what unique issues those products will bring to developers.

The biggest thing for developers, however, is a new set of API’s (just a week before customers get their hands on iOS 9, no less). Peek and poke will be important tools, but developers will have to start getting used to 3D Touch (formerly “Force Touch”). But 3D Touch isn’t just an interaction for users, it allows some interaction between apps. And for the first time it will allow app features to be accessible from the “Home” screen on your iPhone.

Then there’s the Apple TV, and a totally new App Store. Developers will have to repurpose their code somewhat to reach this audience, and the jury is out on how popular this product will be with consumers. The demo was impressive, but Apple TV won’t search Vimeo, YouTube and many other content sources, so the promise of a universal video consumption device remains a hopeful dream.

Watch and learn more about what’s new in Apple’s lineup and what it means to coders.
