Ericsson describes role of NFV and SDN in telecom networks
Software is becoming an increasingly important component to modern telecom networks as carriers and vendors looks to take advantage of increased computing power and lower potential costs of code over hardware.
These advances are now starting to include virtualization technology, which looks to replace proprietary legacy hardware and software combinations with commodity hardware and open-source software solutions for more efficient control and potentially lower costs. Reports predict tens of billions of dollars are set to be spent on solutions using software-defined networking and network functions virtualization by telecom operators over the next several years.
On this week’s NFV/SDN Reality Check, we spoke with Mark Murphy, innovation lead at Ericsson, to provide a basic understanding of virtualization technology in telecom and mobile networks, including the roles of NFV and SDN, and how the two technologies interact. Murphy also touched on how virtualization technology is reshaping Ericsson’s approach to the equipment market.
