By the Numbers – Telecom Unemployment
In October 2015, Telecom unemployment (NAIC 517) dropped to its lowest point of the year at 1.8%, down from 3.8% in September and 4.1% in August. By comparison, in August of 2010, telecom unemployment was at a ten-year high of 11.5%
Employment, all employees in October was 863,000, compared to nearly 1.1 million in October 2005 and 893,000 in October 2010.
Telecommunications employment, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, is a subsector of “Information (NAIC 51)” and consist of the following industry groups:
- Wired Telecommunications Carriers: NAICS 5171
- Wireless Telecommunications Carriers (except Satellite): NAICS 5172
- Telecommunications Resellers: NAICS 5173
- Satellite Telecommunications: NAICS 5174
- Cable and Other Program Distribution: NAICS 5175
- Other Telecommunications: NAICS 5179
The information sector consist of the following subsectors:
- Publishing Industries (except Internet): NAICS 511
- Motion Picture and Sound Recording Industries: NAICS 512
- Broadcasting (except Internet): NAICS 515
- Telecommunications: NAICS 517
- Data Processing, Hosting, and Related Services: NAICS 518
- Other Information Services: NAICS 519
Information sector employment in October 2015, was 2.8 million with a 3.0% unemployment rate. By comparison, the information employment in October 2010 was 2.7 million (9.8% unemployment) and 3.0 million (4.8% unemployment) in October 2005.
Austin, Texas quantifies skill and funding gap
Austin Technology Council (ATC) stopped by the RCRatx Studio Lounge to discuss Austin’s 3.2% unemployment rate along with ATC’s recent reports Tech Talent Survey and Capital Landscape Analysis. Together these reports quantify the skill and funding gaps, which exist in one of the fastest growing tech markets. Both reports can be downloaded on the Austin Technology Council and Austin Chamber of Commerce Websites.
