Bits & Bytes: Seven debuts Open Channel; HSN goes mobile; and more

Seven Networks unveiled its Seven Open Channel mobile traffic optimization solution that it claims cuts the data consumption of smart phones and other mobile devices by up to 70%. Seven said that Open Channel works by monitoring all requests for data made by the mobile apps and only connecting to the network if new updates are available. This translates into a data traffic reduction of up to 70% and an increase in battery life by up to 25%without application or network changes.This solution has been nominated to the 2011 Technology Breakthrough award by the GSMA and will be featured at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Flash Networks, a global provider of intelligent mobile Internet solutions, announced the
introduction of Cell-Based Data Optimization, a more precise way to apply optimization techniques on mobile data networks to alleviate radio and backhaul congestion. The 3 music store, powered by Fonestarz Media, allows people to download tracks direct to their handsets and has the option to automatically update a customer’s status on Twitter and Facebook with the latest music they have purchased. The browser-based store features music from all major and leading independent record labels including Sony, Universal, Warner, EMI and Vidzone.

Home Shopping Network (HSN) announced today the launch of HSN ID, a new way for consumers to access HSN’s special offers, live broadcast and more through Sprint Nextel Corp.’s ID application package on Android-powered devices. As part of the new Sprint ID technology, Sprint customers can now watch and shop for HSN products in real time on the following Sprint ID-enabled devices: LG Optimus S, Sanyo Zio and Samsung Transform.
