AT&T exec Ralph de la Vega to retire at year-end, Arroyo to step in

Ralph de la Vega, who has spent more than 40 years at the various AT&T operations, is set to retire at year-end.

Long-time AT&T executive Ralph de la Vega is set to retire from the telecommunications giant as part of a broader shake up of the company’s executive ranks.

According to CNet, de la Vega is set to retire on Dec. 31, stepping down from his position as CEO of the company’s Business Solutions and International unit. Thaddeus Arroyo, who currently leads AT&T’s Mexico operations, is set to take over de la Vega’s position.

De la Vega has been with AT&T through various permutations, including a role as president of BellSouth Latin America; COO of Cingular Wireless, where he oversaw the integration of Cingular and AT&T Wireless; and as president and CEO of AT&T Mobility.

De la Vega earlier this year was tapped to run the company’s mobile operations in Mexico and recently acquired DirecTV assets across Latin America, while also continuing to oversee the telecom operator’s domestic-focused enterprise business. The move also saw de la Vega add a vice chairman position at AT&T.

De la Vega this past summer was inducted into the Wireless History Foundation Wireless Hall of Fame, with the organization citing “his civic involvement as well as for his leadership by academic institutions and nonprofit organizations.”

Arroyo was initially tapped to run AT&T’s operations in Mexico following the company’s purchase of Nextel Mexico and Iusacell. Arroyo is a long-time exec at the carrier, having previously served as president of AT&T technology development.

Kelly King, who had served as president of consumer mobile services across a 12-state region, is set to replace Arroyo as head of the carrier’s Mexico operations.
