ESPOO, Finland-Chunghwa Telecom Co. Ltd, the largest telecom operator in Taiwan, has contracted Nokia Corp. to build out the second phase of its W-CDMA based third-generation network. The value of the contract was not disclosed, but with the expansion, Nokia continues to be Chunghwa Telecom’s sole 3G infrastructure supplier.
The expansion rollout has already begun and will expand Chunghwa Telecom’s 3G network coverage to the most populated areas in the west coast and major cities of the east coast of the island.
“Following the successful rollout of the first phase of our 3G network with Nokia as the only supplier, we are very pleased to extend this partnership into the second phase. The decision also demonstrates our satisfaction with Nokia’s performance and mature technologies and services,” said Chang Shaio-Tung, president of the Mobile Business Group for Chunghwa Telecom.
Chunghwa Telecom has 8 million customers.
