Infrastructure biz up 10 percent this year, study says

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.-The infrastructure market will bounce to a 10-percent surge this year, bringing in $31.4 billion, Dell’Oro Group predicts in a new study.

The bulk of the jump will be derived from new worldwide Wideband CDMA buildouts, as well as a demands for GSM/GPRS/EDGE in Western Europe. Buildouts in China and other developing countries will also add to the positive picture, according to the report.

“The total radio or bearer capacity, as measured in number of voice channels shipped, will skyrocket, increasing by 54 percent in 2004 to 46 million channels,” commented Greg Collins, senior director of mobile infrastructure research at Dell’Oro Group. “However, price declines will offset much of the increase in radio and base stations shipments, resulting in muted revenue growth.”

The report expects W-CDMA services to more than double this year and eclipse GSM/GPRS/EDGE. Dell’Oro also anticipates a 10-percent rise in annual average subscriber growth between 2003 and 2008 for GSM/GPRS/EDGE services.
