The following list details this week’s infrastructure awards for the cellular, Wi-Fi and WiMAX industries. The contracts are broken down by transmission technology, country and vendor. The value of the contract is included when available.
Cellular
Bhutan: L.M. Ericsson said it has been chosen by Bhutan Telecom to supply a W-CDMA/HSPA network, including radio access equipment and IP core and transmission equipment.
Sweden: Ericsson and Svenska UMTS Nat AB, which is jointly owned by TeliaSonera and Tele2, signed a contract calling for Ericsson to supply HSPA equipment for a nationwide broadband rollout in the country.
WiMAX
Brazil: Alcatel-Lucent announced a commercial WiMAX contract with Brasil Telecom. The contract covers Sao Paulo, Curitiba and Porto Alegre.
Taiwan: Motorola Inc. said it won two contracts to supply WiMAX equipment to Far EasTone Telecommunications Co. Ltd., which is licensed to provide WiMAX service in the southern part of the region.
Miscellaneous
China: Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. said it has been chosen by China Mobile to build a GSM base station on Mt. Everest. The base station will provide mobile coverage for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay Team, that hopes to summit the world’s tallest peak before next year’s Olympic Games. The equipment will be positioned at about 21,325 feet.
Russia: Nokia Siemens Networks and Moscow Telephone Network signed a contract that calls for Nokia Siemens to provide DSLAM broadband access equipment to expand the carrier’s packet transmission network.
