Sports content wins new wireless play

Wireless consumers soon will have more sports-oriented content available through two new deals announced last week.

Fans of the 2004 Olympic Games will be able to access updates, photos and other features thanks to a deal between the Associated Press and Acotel Group Partners. The new services will include SMS and pay-per-download, and will be available to subscribers of most major U.S. carriers, including AT&T Wireless Services Inc., Cingular Wireless L.L.C., Nextel Communications Inc., Sprint PCS, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless.

The service will be available for all 17 days of the Olympics, which opens Aug. 13 in Athens. Rome-based Acotel will provide wireless services and will also offer a selection of Olympic-themed offerings, including anthem ring tone and sports wallpaper.

In addition, THQ Wireless announced licensing deals with Major League Baseball Advanced Media and the Major League Baseball Players’ Association. Under the agreements, THQ will develop officially licensed baseball-themed applications, including games, ring tones and graphics.
