Alaska Communications launches 1x EV-DO service

Alaska Communications Systems Group Inc. launched its CDMA2000 1x EV-DO-based wireless broadband access service, allowing its customers in Alaska to access high-speed wireless data services at speeds up to 2.4 megabits per second from laptop computers. The service, which rides on the carrier’s recently launched CDMA network, is priced at $100 per month for unlimited access and initially will rely on a Sierra Wireless AirCard 580 PC Card, which retails for $400.

ACS joins a handful of carriers that have launched commercial 1x EV-DO services in the United States, including Verizon Wireless and Monet Networks, while Alltel Corp. and U.S. Cellular Corp. have expressed interest in testing the high-speed data service.
