BEDMINSTER, N.J.-Following calls from several victims checking on the status of orders, Verizon Wireless said it has notified authorities of a telephone scam offering free phones and service involving one or more individuals claiming to represent the carrier in calls to prospective customers.
Verizon Wireless said the scam involves an offer of a free phone and service for $3.95, which is the purported cost of shipping and handling, and asks that the potential customer provide checking account and bank routing number information.
Verizon Wireless noted it has not offered free phones and service as part of a promotional or telemarketing campaign, and victims calling the carrier have been told it’s not a legitimate offer and they should contact local law enforcement authorities, their banking institutions and credit bureaus.
