Western Wireless expands 1x footprint

BELLEVUE, Wash.-Western Wireless Corp. expanded its CDMA2000 1x network to provide its OpenDoor wireless Internet service and Hello2Pix picture messaging service to its Cellular One customers in Colorado, North Dakota, Utah and Wyoming. The carrier launched 1x services in it Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Texas markets last December.

Western Wireless noted its OpenDoor service allows customers to access the Internet through laptop computers with wireless data cards, smart phones or laptops connected to wireless devices using data cables. The Hello2Pix service allows customers to send multimedia messages, including pictures, sound and text, from select handsets to other MMS-capable phones or to e-mail addresses.

Customers who sign up for the OpenDoor service by May 1 will receive unlimited megabytes of transmission for $60 per month, while the Hello2Pix service costs $4 per month and includes 3 megabytes of picture messages and 1 megabyte of Web storage capacity.
