Wireless content news centers on entertainment deals

Following a spate of merger-and-acquisition news on the wireless content front, companies now are announcing further deals and offerings in the space.

First, wireless entertainment publisher Mobile Scope said it expanded its licensing deal with Twentieth Century Fox with the rights to the “Die Hard” movies. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Mobile Scope said it plans to offer a suite of branded entertainment products based on the movies for Java and BREW devices starting this summer.

“Mobile Scope has a proven track record working with Fox in transforming its properties, such as “Ice Age,” into wireless content,” said Jim Beddows, vice president of wireless entertainment for Twentieth Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising Division. “And with Fox’s seemingly endless catalog of properties perfect for the wireless space, we are excited to begin work with Mobile Scope to this end.”

Separately, wireless gaming company Sorrent announced new licensing deals for games and other content. The company said it signed a deal with TV channel Nickelodeon to make content based on the new EverGirl brand and a separate deal with TV channel Spike TV to make games based on the “Ren & Stimpy” cartoons.

Finally, ring tone company Faith West said it will offer voice tones-spoken word ring tones-from 1980s Motley Crue rocker Vince Neil. The voice tones will feature the rocker yelling swear words, among other things. In an explicative-ridden quote in Faith West’s press release announcing the news, Neil said, “Wait till they hear me on their phones.”

The content news follows Square Enix’s purchase of UIEvolution, among other acquisitions.
