We can also safely state that every industry uses transport services or logistics processes to a greater or lesser extent. This is what causes these two areas to be so important in the modern technological revolution.
In logistics, hundreds of operators are involved in the transport fleet management process and the risks are lurking at every turn: from delays in the warehouse, to route planning errors, to inadequately secured food in cold chain, to even theft of the goods. Monitoring the availability of vehicles is yet another challenge the industry is facing, which is why intelligent transport turns out to be so crucial in the industry and there’s no doubt it can be improved by IoT ideas.
IoT helps companies make better use of their supply chain by providing connectivity to various assets, enabling data generated from these devices, improving tracking systems or monitoring product quality and then utilizing all this information to make the customer experience better.
One such case of logistics in IoT is the recent cooperation of Traxens, expert in providing high value data and services for the supply chain industry, and AVSystem, leader in IoT device management solutions.
Traxens specializes in providing insight into global supply chains by using so-called IoT-enabled devices — designed for tracking containers used in maritime shipping, railfreight and other related transport industries. This year, Traxens received substantial support from the biggest transportation and shipping companies such as CMA CGM and Mediterranean Shipping Co, and potentially coming up Maersk.
Traxens’ IoT devices send various pieces of information about containers such as temperature, geolocation, humidity, acceleration etc.
This is not easy, especially when you take into consideration the fact that the devices are very dependent on their batteries and in general do not have much computing power at their disposal, while the containers can be at the open sea where connectivity is usually very poor.
This is where AVSystem steps in with its fully-fledged device management platform — Coiote IoT Device Management.
The platform enables the control of devices with the use of LwM2M
(OMA SpecWorks’ Lightweight M2M) — a standard designed especially for low-power devices communicating over potentially unstable networks.
Coiote IoT Device Management platform enables Traxens to remotely configure their trackers as well as perform various actions such as firmware or software upgrades over the air. Coiote’s multi-tenancy and sub-tenant grouping models enable enhanced device-data aggregation and monitoring capabilities allowing it to present telemetry data in an efficient manner.
Managing trackers with AVSystem’s Coiote IoT Device Management platform over the LwM2M protocol will allow Traxens to considerably prolong the battery life of its devices and enable efficient performance, even in difficult conditions.
This isn’t the first time AVSystem engaged in cooperation revolving around LwM2M. Worth mentioning is especially this year’s collaboration with AT&T, where the companies launched together LwM2M Interoperability Program for automatic LwM2M interoperability testing which will further promote the adoption of this standard in the IoT world.
