Bits and Bytes: CDG announces award winners; Siano introduces TV chip; and more

The CDMA Development Group announced the winners of its 2010 Smart Wireless Awards, which recognize innovative wireless devices and services that use CDMA2000 networks. Winners this year were AnyDATA Corp. and partner Qualcomm Inc. in the modules category, MedApps Inc. and partner KORE Telematics Inc. in the devices category, and ZTE Corp. and partner China Telecom in the services category.
Siano Mobile Silicon entered the U.S. mobile TV market with its SMS1530 product, which is an advanced receiver chip that supports the Advanced Television Systems Committee A/153 Mobile Digital TV standard. The chip also supports FM radio and has on-chip provisions for conditional access for pay-TV services, said the company.
Singapore Airlines has chosen OnAir’s inflight connectivity service to allow its passengers to stay connected while travelling. OnAir’s service is based on Inmarsat’s SwiftBroadband service. The service will allow customers to send text messages with their GSM-compatible mobile phones, send and receive e-mail messages on smartphones and make and receive voice calls.
Embee Mobile said it expanded its mobile operator coverage in the United States and worldwide to cover more than 50 mobile operators, including India, Mexico, the Philippines and Vietnam. The company launched its mobile wallet solution last year. The solution allows customers to earn points by taking surveys, playing games and performing other tasks. The points can be redeemed for mobile service.
FedEx Office introduced free, unlimited Wi-Fi access at most of its U.S. locations provided through AT&T. The service is currently available at 1,000 FedEx Office Print & Ship Center locations, with additional locations scheduled to be launched this month. AT&T also announced it has been working with Indiana University to provide visitors to its campus with access to its Wi-Fi service. The university currently provides secure wireless network access to students and staff.
Berkeley Varitronics Systems Inc. introduced its 4G LTE YellowFin analyzer product, which allows field engineers to measure RF integrity with advanced measurements like RSSI, CINR and Multipath. The product has full spectrum analysis capabilities and comes in two models, one that covers the 2.0-5.9 GHz range and one that covers the 700 MHz – 2.0 GHz range.
Numerex Corp. said it formed its M2M Business Solutions Group, which will provide a dedicated team to work with clients on machine-to-machine solution development.
Syniverse Technologies said it has added 65 new customers this year, including a recent agreement with Numerex. The deal allows Numerex to offer a complete global M2M platform to its customers.
