Japan’s largest wireless operator, NTT DoCoMo, said it surpassed the 60 million subscriber mark on March 11. That total includes customers signed up to its various technology offerings, and

The carrier noted it took just over 13 years from its initial launch in late 1979 to add its first 1 million customers; surpassing the 10 million customer mark just four years later; and topping 20 million customers 18 months later in August 1998. DoCoMo need just under two years to hit add its next 10 million subscribers; just over a year and a half to surpass 40 million customers; just under four years to hit the 50 million customer mark; and nearly six and a half years to add its latest 10 million customers.

DoCoMo currently controls roughly half of the country’s cellular market with rivals KDDI (34.6 million customers) and Softbank (25.4 million customers) making up a majority of the remaining share.
