SANTA CLARA, Calif.-China Unicom said it will use Java technology from Sun Microsystems Inc. to offer downloadable applications to wireless phone users. China Unicom said it will use Sun’s Java Technology for the Wireless Industry (JTWI) platform to develop its UniJa environment.
“A complete Java-ecosystem business model for carriers, handset manufacturers, value-added service providers and application and content developers is now in place,” said Wang Yingpei, general manager of China Unicom’s Value-added Services. “We believe this agreement and further cooperation of Unicom, Sun and ZRRT will not only help China Unicom expand its own business but also help Chinese citizens take advantage of innovations in the communications industry.”
More than 200 million Java technology-enabled mobile devices have been deployed by 27 handset manufacturers through 77 carrier networks worldwide. However, those in the industry have long criticized the fractured nature of Java in wireless.
