Sonopia Inc. pocketed $12.7 million in a second round of funding led by Cardinal Venture Capital.
The Silicon Valley startup serves as a kind of customizable mobile virtual network operator, providing back-end support for companies, schools, charities and other organizations looking to deploy their own branded wireless services. Recent Sonopia partners include the National Wildlife Federation, American Medical Student Association and Long Island Ducks.
Previous investors Sevin Rosen Funds and ComVentures also participated in the round.
“With a mobile phone and calling plan from one of these organizations, subscribers get three benefits: access to information directly from the source, the opportunity to support a good cause just by making their daily calls, and a chance to more closely align with and show off their affinity for a particular organization or brand,” said CEO Juha Christensen.
