M2M expected to bring wireless revenue opportunities

DALLAS-Machine-to-machine (M2M) business applications-distinguished from wireless data services in their ability to automatically and autonomously communicate, control and affect the operation of remote machines or systems in real time-will create significant new revenue opportunities for wireless equipment manufacturers, service providers and application developers, according to a report from Alexander Resources.

The research group expects new lower cost, sophisticated wireless technologies and networks, coupled with the pressure on businesses to lower costs and be more competitive, to accelerate the demand for and deployment of wireless M2M applications.

Alexander expects new M2M applications to draw upon advanced wireless technologies including: Bluetooth, CDMA 1xRTT/CDMA2000, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, RFID, TETRA, Ultra-Wideband (UWB), WLAN, ZigBee and proprietary wireless data networks.
