Alltel’s calling zone swells into Canada, Mexico

Alltel Corp. has expanded the reach of its plans to include toll-free calls to and from Mexico, Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The coverage extends to major Canadian cities and substantial areas of southern Canada. In Mexico, the majority of the coverage is in the south-central part of the country and includes 800 Mexican cities, according to the carrier-although it noted on its Web site that its coverage in Mexico “may be more thorough than it appears.”
The names of Alltel’s roaming partners were not immediately available.
The new plans start at $60 per month for 450 anytime minutes on a single line, and 1,000 off-peak minutes within North America. Within the U.S. coverage areas, callers have unlimited mobile-to-mobile calling and access to Alltel’s MyCircle calling feature, which allows customers to choose up to 10 wireless or wireline numbers for unlimited calling.
Individual plans top out at $150 per month for 2,500 anytime minutes and 1,000 off-peak minutes. The plans are not available as family plans.
