Verizon Wireless to pick up American Wireless licenses in Ark.

BEDMINSTER, N.J.-Verizon Wireless signed a definitive agreement to acquire 10-megahertz PCS licenses from American Wireless License Group L.L.C. covering 1.1 million potential customers in the Arkansas Basic Trading Areas of Little Rock and Pine Bluff for $7.75 million in cash.

Verizon Wireless said it would use the spectrum, which is adjacent to its license areas in Tennessee, Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi, to expand its network presence in Arkansas. The carrier currently offers service in the Little Rock and Pine Bluff markets through roaming agreements.

Verizon Wireless noted the licenses would become part of its South Area, which is headquartered in Alpharetta, Ga., and that the transaction should close during the second quarter.
