The following list details this week’s infrastructure awards for the cellular, Wi-Fi and WiMAX industries. The contracts are broken down by transmission technology, country and vendor. The value of the contract is included when available.
- Cellular
- Austria: Mobilkom Austria Group chose Alcatel-Lucent to supply GSM/EDGE and UMTS/HSPA equipment .
- Belgium: L.M. Ericsson said it won a contract to provide managed services for Mobistar. The deal includes the transfer of about 150 employees from Mobistar to Ericsson.
- Germany: Alcatel-Lucent said it won a contract with T-Mobile to enhance the operator’s GSM network with GSM/EDGE technology.
- Nigeria: Celtel Nigeria has chosen Motorola Inc. to expand its GSM network in the Southeast and South regions of the country. The deal is valued at $50 million.
- Russia: Alcatel-Lucent said it has been chosen by VimpelCom to upgrade the carrier’s wireless network with GSM/EDGE equipment.
- Sweden: Nokia Corp. and 3G Infrastructure Services AB, a joint venture of Telenor and Hi3G, said they have extended their managed services contract and established a new contract that calls for Nokia to supply a capacity upgrade for 3GIS’ transport network.
Wi-Fi - United States: Internet service provider EarthLink Inc. has been chosen to build a citywide Wi-Fi network in Houston.
WiMAX - Spain: Alvarion Ltd. said the government of Catalonia is using its BreezeMAX system to provide advanced broadband services throughout the autonomous state.
- Global: Cable & Wireless International selected Alvarion Ltd. to provide its BreezeMAX system for fixed and mobile 802.16e deployments.
- Greece: Craig Wireless has deployed a MIMO-enabled WiMAX solution from Nortel Networks to provide multimedia services in the country.
- Netherlands: Motorola Inc. said it has been chosen by Worldmax to install a pilot 802.16e WiMAX network in Amsterdam.
Miscellaneous - China: Alcatel-Lucent said Shanghai Telecom has selected it to provide a citywide network upgrade in Shanghai to include multimedia services.
- Czech Republic: Alcatel-Lucent said it deployed a multiservice transport network for T-Mobile Czech Republic as part of the operator’s IP network transition.
- Bangladesh: L.M. Ericsson said it will provide a complete IP mobile backbone network across the country for Grameenphone. Also in Bangladesh, Ericsson won a contract with Warid Telecom to plan, design and integrate an in-building solution covering 43 cities.
- Switzerland: L.M. Ericsson said it signed a deal to deliver an IP Multimedia Subsystem solution to Swisscom.
