Buckinghamshire County Council and Hertfordshire County Council have signed up to InterDigital mobility data engine oneTRANSPORT, taking its smart-city customer count to four in the UK. The duo will share mobility data with third parties for the development of new mobility solutions.
Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire join Northamptonshire County Council and Oxfordshire County Council. UK engineering and design consultancy Arup, Spain-based data intelligence firm WorldSensing and UK smart mobility provider Traak Systems are also involved.
The oneTRANSPORT engine makes licensed data from different civic functions and civic authorities available in an open, standards-based system, which is used by InterDigital and its partners to develop transport solutions for cities and councils.
Jim Nolan, executive vice president of products at InterDigital, said: “The value of intelligent transport and smart cities will only be unlocked when all transport operators, local authorities, transport agencies, and service providers work together. The oneTRANSPORT data marketplace aims to deliver this key objective.”
The company’s deal with Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire will enable all parties to share data with specific organisations for purposes through a central repository without, without having to implement direct data sharing agreements or integrate dedicated systems.
Hertfordshire County Council said the deal will help it to exploit its own transport data from various systems and suppliers, and enable it to access real-time traffic data from local road networks in neighbouring counties, providing early warning of abnormal traffic flows and better understanding of regional traffic patterns.
Derek Twigg, client lead at Hertfordshire County Council, said: “InterDigital has already demonstrated the oneTRANSPORT data marketplace’s effectiveness in managing real time events with the case study for our home football matches at Watford Football Club; we hope to use this learning and approach to managing future events and incidents on Hertfordshire’s road network.”
Buckinghamshire County Council has worked with InterDigital for a number of years already. Mark Kemp, the council’s director of growth, strategy and highway services, commented: “We are continuing to support the data marketplace and will explore ways to better utilise our existing data sets whether this be internally or externally.”
