Battery life is a very limiting factor when it comes to using mobile phones in places where there simply isn’t any electricity, but thanks to Vodafone, the problem could be solved with a new solar powered handset targeted at the Indian market.
The VF 247 purportedly charges up by itself as soon as it is exposed to ambient light, using its inbuilt Sun Boost hardware and software. Though eight hours of direct sunlight are needed to fully charge the phone, the handset can also glean enough juice from normal, indirect light too, making it far more useful.
Vodafone is also claiming that fully charged, the phone can survive on standby for over eight days, however, don’t expect to get more than four hours of talk time out of it.
A standard feature phone, the VF 247 sports an FM radio, color screen and a torch, always useful in places short on electricity. The device comes to India just a year after Samsung launched a similar solar powered phone, the Guru 1107.
Vodafone is expected to price the device at around 1500 Rupees, or $32 from next month.
