Alcatel finds win in Cingular network

PARIS-Cingular Wireless L.L.C. said it will use Alcatel Inc.’s multiservice transport solution in its HSDPA network.
Cingular launched its HSDPA network in December. Alcatel said its technology will help Cingular migrate large-scale multiservice ATM networks to IP/MPLS without compromising availability, manageability and quality of service. Included in the deal are Alcatel’s 7670 Routing Switch Platform, which provides support for IP/MPLS and ATM, along with the 1671 Service Connect multiservice cross-connect, which Alcatel says provides grooming and traffic optimization. In addition, the company’s 5620 Network Manager will provide Cingular with end-to-end, point-and-click network management, along with a suite of operations, administration, maintenance and provisioning tools.
“We will be moving in lock-step with Cingular’s aggressive development of the first HSDPA 3G network in the U.S.,” stated Hubert de Pesquidoux, president of Alcatel’s North American activities. “The Alcatel solution is extremely flexible and scalable as well as simple to manage and will provide significant reductions in Cingular’s overall capex and opex.”
Financial details of Alcatel’s deal with Cingular were not disclosed, but the win is significant for Alcatel as the vendor has struggled to win contracts with American carriers.
