Cingular launches 3G in New York City

NEW YORK—Cingular Wireless L.L.C. has begun offering service on its high-speed UMTS/HSDPA wireless network in the greater New York City area.

According to coverage maps on Cingular’s Web site, the service covers much of Manhattan plus parts of Brooklyn and Queens and an area surrounding the John F. Kennedy International Airport. Other parts of the region with current UMTS/HSDPA coverage include White Plains, N.Y. and a section of New Jersey near the Newark International Airport.

The maps indicate that Cingular will substantially expand its coverage in the area by September. Along with PC cards for data connections, Cingular’s Web site offers customers in New York ZIP codes the Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. ZX10 flip phone with 3G capabilities.

Cingular’s BroadbandConnect 3G service debuted last year in 16 markets: Austin, Dallas and Houston, Texas; Baltimore; Boston; Chicago/Gary Ind.; Las Vegas; Phoenix; Portland, Ore.; Salt Lake City; San Francisco, San Jose, and San Diego, Calif.; Seattle; Tacoma, Wash.; and Washington D.C. Cingular has since added NYC and the carrier’s hometown of Atlanta.
