LONDON—Yahoo Inc. scored a major wireless win with an agreement to provide mobile Internet services for Hutchison’s 3 Group carriers in Europe and Asia.
The 3 Group tapped Yahoo to deliver mobile search, instant messaging and e-mail services as well as to provide the operator’s wireless mobile Web offering. The first services are set to launch in the United Kingdom this summer; launches are scheduled to follow in Italy, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Australia and Hong Kong as well as on Hutchison Telecom International in India.
The companies will partner to market the services on Yahoo sites and 3’s networks.
“This relationship isn’t just about us buying more content to put on our portal,” said Christian Salbaing, 3 Group’s managing director of Europe Telecommunications. “It’s about a deep engagement between our two companies to bring some of the world’s most popular Internet services and content to 3’s networks.”
The deal allows Yahoo to keep pace with rival Google Inc., which has inked agreements to provide services for Vodafone Live, T-Mobile International and Japanese operator KDDI Corp.
