SAN DIEGO-Qualcomm Inc. said it successfully demonstrated fully mobile Voice over Internet Protocol calls over its EV-DO Revision A technology.
The announcement is notable as Sprint Nextel Corp. has announced plans to launch EV-DO Rev. A technology by next year. Industry watchers have previously discussed the potential for VoIP over EV-DO Rev. A networks.
Qualcomm said it showcased Internet-based voice calls over mobile, pedestrian and fixed environments using commercial-ready, application-specific integrated circuits in prototype handsets and networks. The technology could enable carriers to migrate voice services to IP-based platforms, thereby creating a common service platform for voice and data. The field tests involved 62 simultaneous calls conducted over CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Rev. A networks within a single 1.25 MHz channel.
