MONTREAL—Alltel Corp. selected Oz Communications Inc.’s mobile instant messaging solution to power its new Axcess Instant Messaging service.
The BREW-based solution gives Alltel customers access to AOL’s instant messaging service and Yahoo Inc.’s Messenger service in a mobile format that closely mirrors the PC experience, said Oz.
IM service is expected to be available on about a dozen Alltel handsets. The application will be offered free of charge, although airtime charges will apply during the two- to three-minute download process. IM usage will appear on customers’ bills as text messages.
Oz has worked with several carriers on mobile IM and e-mail solutions, including Virgin Mobile USA, Boost Mobile and Cingular Wireless L.L.C.
