ESPN exports content to Canadian, European, Latin American users

BRISTOL, Conn.—ESPN announced an international push for its ESPN-branded mobile content.

The company said the new initiatives target wireless customers in Canada, Europe and Latin America and covers a variety of content including sports news and information, video, ringtones, wallpaper, wireless Internet sites and short messaging services, said the company.

In Canada, ESPN is offering video highlights to Canadian operators through its affiliation with mobile media company QuickPlay. The company also has agreements with Bell Mobility and Telus Mobility to offer data applications, games, wallpaper and ringtones.

In Europe, ESPN is distributing X Games video clips and coverage including same-day highlights and medal runs.

In Latin America, the company is offering telecast-integrated SMS campaigns that allow fans to participate in promotions, contests and polls via text messaging in Argentina, Brazil and Mexico.

ESPN has already launched a service in Asia that offers X-Games content to subscribers there.

ESPN has been a major brand in the U.S. wireless world, and recently launched its Mobile ESPN L.L.C. mobile virtual network operator service that runs of Sprint Nextel Corp.’s CDMA network.
