Mobilist: Carriers should embrace mobile cloud; emerging markets may be drivers

Carriers should jump into mobile cloud to build their portfolios, allowing them to take over a number of business processes and move them into the cloud.  Some of the main opportunities include collaboration and productivity services. In addition, the move into mobile cloud may be driven by emerging markets.

These were some of key points of the latest RCR TV Mobilist program on mobile cloud. The program features comments by Camille Mendler, principal analyst at Informa Telecoms & Media; Eric Troyer, global director, mobile data and IP peering at Equinix; and RCR Wireless News’ Roberta Prescott and Jeff Mucci.

Mobile cloud has been called the next era of cloud computing, once it becomes more mature and ubiquitous.

“It is easy to say that developed markets are far more advanced because they have access to mobile cloud services, but actually when I consider what could immediately change, I see more innovation for fundamental change in emerging markets because of the great dependence on mobile devices and the lack of fixed infrastructure,” said Mendler.

Troyer agreed. “Emerging markets will probably embrace mobile cloud first,” he said.

Although connectivity is not as good in emerging markets as it is in mature markets, the speakers noted that this issue might be solved. “We need to look at who is saying they will invest in mobile infrastructure, and some service providers have decided to jump ahead to the 4G environment. There is a lot of work that needs to be done, but once the investments are made, it will be leap frog,” Mendler said.

The RCR TV Mobilist program on mobile cloud is part of an RCR Wireless News’ triple play program, which also includes a feature report and an editorial webinar. They can all be downloaded for free (a subscription is required).
