NTT DoCoMo Inc. announced plans to begin selling Nokia Corp.’s 6630 3G phone. The announcement stands as a notable victory for Nokia, which has largely been locked out of DoCoMo’s market.
Interestingly, DoCoMo is calling the phone the FOMA NM850iG, and in a press release about the phone did not say that it was from Nokia. However, the phone does carry the Nokia logo.
DoCoMo has long tightly controlled the development of phones for its network, and generally does not announce the manufacturers of its phones. Often, DoCoMo’s phones only carry the carrier’s logo and not that of the manufacturer.
NEC Corp., Fujitsu and other Asian vendors provide most of DoCoMo’s phones. However, the carrier recently has been reaching out to the likes of Nokia, Motorola Inc. and High Tech Computer Corp. for phones. RCR
